Cold Chamber, University of Warwick, Coventry

May 2022

One of the main activities that we will be undertaking in Antarctica is medical research. This will form part of the daily routine with measurements being taken while we trek to the pole in between pulk pulls. As we will be taking the measurements ourselves it is important that we have a good understanding of what we will be asked to do and what equipment we will need.

The team was given the opportunity to spend time with the researchers at the Human Metabolic Research Unit in Coventry and their cold chamber. This included explanations about the research

protocol and explaining how the equipment works and how to use it. The team also had an opportunity to spend time in the cold chamber, practicing with equipment we will be using and going through some of the techniques we have previously learnt together. A particular highlight was putting up a tent in a simulated blizzard!
